Casino Slots: What RTP Actually Means

Casino slots often describe a theoretical return to player, or RTP. RTP is a long-run model value. It is not a promise that a player will receive that percentage back in a session.

RTP and house edge use the same base

If a game’s specified RTP is 96%, the corresponding theoretical house edge is 4% of total turnover under that model. Turnover means the sum of stakes across plays, including credits that are played again. It is not simply the amount initially added to an account.

For example, 100 plays at one credit per play create 100 credits of turnover. At a 4% theoretical edge, the long-run expected loss associated with that turnover is four credits. A real sequence can end much higher or lower. The calculation is a model average, not a forecast.

Volatility describes variation

Two games can have similar stated RTP and different result distributions. A game with more concentrated large awards can behave differently over a short period from a game with smaller frequent awards. A hit is also not always a net profit. An award smaller than the stake can still be counted as a paying outcome.

Read the paytable and game information. A promotional screenshot does not reveal the complete distribution, and a few observed spins cannot establish RTP. Nevada regulations discuss theoretical payout and the display of rules. That jurisdiction-specific source does not certify every product named in our reference.

Check the exact game configuration

A title can have more than one configuration or version. Do not transfer a number from a similarly named game without confirming its information screen. Bonus features, purchase options and separate promotional balances may also have their own rules.

There is no reliable conclusion that a slot must pay because it has not paid recently. Under an independent random model, earlier outcomes do not create a debt owed to the next player. Treat claims of guaranteed timing as unsupported.

Keep the calculation in context

The expected-loss calculator uses an edge you supply. It does not look up or verify a slot’s configuration. Check official game information and keep spending limits independent of a displayed RTP number. If continuing feels difficult, use the support and limits page.
